A roadshow is coming to Argyll and Bute this week aimed at encouraging people to recycle more and give recyclable items another life.

The Scottish Government’s recycling road show events will take place at Lidl, Oban on Wednesday 14, Co-Op, Lochgilphead Thursday 15 and Tesco, Oban on Friday 16 to remind the public of the wide range of items that can be recycled, provide top tips on how to recycle more and give details of the recycling collections and facilities available in the local area.

There will also be an opportunity to take part in a fun, interactive Rapid Recycler game, challenging the public to recycle as many items as they can in 60 seconds, saving them from landfill.

The events will be supported by Argyll and Bute Council and a local waste adviser will be on hand to answer questions about recycling in the area.

The road show events are part of the Scottish Government’s 2012 recycling campaign, which launched on the 30th January, to encourage the Scottish public to recycle more recyclable items, more often.

Encouraging people to recycle more helps us tackle climate change. It avoids materials decaying in landfill and releasing greenhouse gases. Recycling also uses less energy, and creates fewer emissions, than if we produced materials from scratch. The Scottish Government has set ambitious targets for recycling in its Zero Waste Plan - the aim is to have 70% of all waste recycled by 2025.

To encourage people to do more, the campaign features memorable characters that have been created from boxes, cartons, bottles and cans, each with animated eyes and a personality. All of the characters represent items that can be recycled, to encourage people to think twice before throwing things away that could be saved from landfill and given another life.

Argyll and Bute Council’s Head of Roads and Amenity Services Jim Smith said: “We all need to do our bit to create a cleaner, greener Scotland. Recycling more and giving things another life is one of the ways we can do this.

“To encourage people across Argyll and Bute to do more, a member of our team will be at the road show events to talk to the public about our local recycling initiatives and collection facilities and provide handy hints and tips on how they can recycle more often.”
