A landslip this morning at the Rest and be Thankful has closed the road in both directions.

The slip happened at about 7am at a point on the A83 Tarbet to Inveraray trunk road about half a mile west of the Rest.

A diversion route is in place via Crianlarich, Tyndrum and Dalmally. This will add an extra 26 miles to the journey.

A clearance operation is underway but there is currently no indication of when the road will re-open.   Further updates will be given as more information becomes available.

Argyll and Bute’s spokesperson for transport and infrastructure, Councillor Duncan MacIntyre, said: “This is obviously very bad news for Argyll and Bute residents and businesses, although we were aware of the heightened risk given the heavy rain we’ve had over the last couple of weeks.

“Initial assessments suggest that this is a significantly smaller slip than has occurred in the past, which is good news.

“I obviously look forward to it being cleared and the road being back open as soon as possible. In the meantime, I would ask people to allow extra time for their journeys and pay attention to any advisory signs.”
