Love is a temporary madness; it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision.\u00a0 You have to work out whether your root was so entwined together that is it inconceivable that you should ever part.\u00a0 Because this is what love is.\u00a0 Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion.\u00a0 That is just being in love, which any fool can do.\u00a0 Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.\u00a0 Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two.<\/p>

It\u2019s the texts: \u2018Hope your day goes well\u2019, \u2018How did today go?\u2019, \u2018Thinking of you today\u2019 and \u2018Picked up loo roll\u2019.<\/p>

I know that love happens under the splendour of moon and stars and fireworks and sunsets but it also happens when you\u2019re lying on blow-up airbeds in a childhood bedroom, sitting in A&E or in the queue for a passport, or in a traffic jam.<\/p>

Love is a quiet, reassuring, relaxing, pottering, pedantic, harmonious hum of a thing; something you can easily forget is there, even though its palms are outstretched beneath you in case you fall.<\/p>
