Lochgilphead public realm works

ongoing works in Colchester SquareArgyll and Bute Council is installing new footways in Lochgilphead as part of a wider project to make improvements to the town, which will ultimately include upgrades to the Front Green. More information on the wider project can be found here

These works are focused in and around Colchester Square and lower Argyll Street.

The project involves digging up the current footways and replacing them with new ones, with wider surfaces around Colchester Square providing more walking space for pedestrians. We are also installing new road crossing points and special surfaces which make the footway safer for people with mobility challenges, wheelchair users and people with prams.

Scottish and Southern Energy [SSE] are also taking this opportunity to upgrade power supply cables. With the footways being dug up anyway, now is the perfect time for SSE to do these works, preventing further disruption in the future.

Lochgilphead works - image of constuction zonesThe works will happen in five distinct zones, and are expected to finish around the end of March. The scheme has been split into zones for the purposes of programming and managing the job.

At points we will be working on multiple zones at once – this is the safest way to deliver the works while protecting our workforce and the public.

The zones are:

  • Zone 1 – A83 sections (shown in red)
  • Zone 2 – Colchester Square [west side] (shown in orange)
  • Zone 3 – Colchester Square [east side] (shown in green)
  • Zone 4 – Argyll Street [west side] (shown in pink)
  • Zone 5 – Argyll Street (east side] (shown in purple)

The affected area and work zones can be seen in the Constuction Zone Diagram

Inevitably this work is going to be disruptive. We have chosen to do the work as quickly as possible to minimise the impact of any disruption.

We are currently revising our project programme as a result of the recent cold snap causing delays, and the programme will be published here next week.

January, February and March tend to be better months to do this kind of work as our towns are not as busy as they are in the summer months, and of course COVID restrictions mean towns are even quieter again.

Pedestrian access to all shops/local business will be maintained at all times, although the routes to and from shops may change from time to time.

The pedestrian access routes will be clearly signposted and marked out with blue walking plates like these:

In order to keep our workforce safe and deliver the works as quickly as possible, lower Argyll Street and Colchester Square have been closed to vehicles, and to allow traffic to flow around the diversions we have also restricted parking on surrounding streets as shown in the following map:

We will be providing regular updates on the works, including before and after photos, by email to key stakeholders, and on this webpage.
