From 2009 to 2013 a comprehensive programme of training events and complimentary initiatives was delivered via the THI training programme.
Traditional skills training was provided to upskill local contractors, building professionals and Local Authority staff. These one and two day training courses were delivered by specialist training providers in Campbeltown. Fourteen courses were run with over 150 persons attending. Feedback was very positive.
To encourage the local community to participate in the management of their heritage, over 30 events, training courses and complementary initiatives were delivered, involving over 1400 home owners, community group members and local school children. Sessions ranged from home owner maintenance and repair to a free gutter clearance programme; to archaeology and social history.
The programme was funded by Argyll & the Islands LEADER, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Argyll & Bute Council.

Paint types suitable for historic buildings. Practical sessions on lime wash, lime paint and silicate/mineral paints.
Structural Appraisal & Repair of Historic Buildings
Assessing traditional & historic buildings, repairs, construction & materials, legislation & guidance, surveys, recording & conservation philosophy.
Mortars for Repair & Conservation
Mortars available for traditional buildings, focussing on lime based mortars for building, pointing, harling or render.
Repairing Stone Buildings
Homeowners - Stone & mortar types, stone decay & repair, mortars & renders for stone buildings and painting stone buildings.
Conservation & Repair of Stonemasonry
Survey & assessment, materials, mortar & stone matching. Repairs including; vegetation removal, patch re-pointing (ashlar and rubble), dressing back stone surfaces, stone surface mortar repairs & indenting new stone.
External Render & Harling
Principles, selection, application and maintenance of external render and harling, & paint finishes.
Repair of Traditional Plasterwork
Consolidation and repair of traditional plasterwork. repair of typical defects such as cracking and patch repairs

The course content included; examples of how illustration can be used as part of marketing, review of illustrations currently used by local groups, looking at good examples, how to commission an illustrator.

Assisted the Kintyre Civic Society with an exhibition on CARS and THI during Doors Open Day.
Campbeltown Heritage Trail formed
Volunteer group formed to deliver free walking tours in July and August. Three leaflets also produced for public use.

Design and Publication of Campbeltown Tenement Maintenance Guide

Provides tenement owners with advice on maintaining their buildings, working with neighbours, setting up owners associations, how the council can help and best ways to manage the costs of maintenance.
Public event for anyone with an interest in the history and significance of shopfronts.
Digital Recording & Editing
First event - S1 students created Powerpoint presentations highlighting THI improvements to the centre of Campbeltown. Second event - S3 students produced a brochure giving an overview of THI project.
Interviewing for Oral History
Primary school students created radio programmes featuring historic buildings in Campbeltown town centre. First event – Dalintober Primary School featured Campbeltown Town Hall. Second event - Involved Castlehill Primary whose programme featured the recently completed Old Schoolhouse.
Surveying Traditional Buildings Lecture
Skills and techniques involved in surveying condition & assessing conservation, repair and maintenance requirements of traditional/historic buildings.
