About the artwork

Still life of a table covered in a white tablecloth and white wooden chair, with a white jug to the left. Off centre there is a dressing mirror with fruit in front of it and a jug with roses; the vibrant colours of these objects contrast with the muted colours of the background, and are echoed in the yellow cushion on the wooden chair.

About the artist

John Cunningham RGI (born Lanarkshire, 1926-1998) studied and taught at Glasgow School of Art. Cunningham was known for his distinctive still lifes, landscapes and interiors. He lived in a studio flat in the centre of Glasgow, which was designed by Sir John Burnett expressly for the use of an artist. It was here, in this unique ambience, that his still lifes were painted and where his landscapes were finished.
