Abstracted still life painted using loose, expressive brushwork, with vivid colour contrasting with large areas of dark and shadow. The artist has painted a corner cupboard, with a bowl of fruit on the top shelf, with two pigeons and a long necked jug on the shelf beneath.

About the artist

Sir Robin Philipson RA RSA FRSE RSW (born Lancashire, 1916 1992) studied and taught at Edinburgh College of Art. He is known for his expressive use of paint, often using heavy impasto and bold colour. He is particularly renowned for his cockfight paintings, a series which began in the 1950s and helped to establish his career as a painter.
