What to do if you are worried that a child may have been trafficked

If you believe that a child may have been trafficked, it is vital that you act on this concern quickly, as trafficked children very often "disappear" if their traffickers believe someone is concerned about them.  You should contact the Social Work Child Protection Team. They will be able to advise you on what further action should be taken.

Given the level of risk for trafficked children, it is recommended that you do not seek consent from their carers before making a referral.

Where it is believed that child trafficking may have taken place, the Social Work Department will co-ordinate an assessment, using the Trafficking Assessment form. All agencies have a role to play in sharing information and supporting the child. The welfare of the child is the paramount consideration in all matters.

An Inter Agency Child Protection/Vulnerable Young Person case discussion will be held, to consider:

  • Immediate care and protection needs of the child
  • Any legal issues including immigration/asylum claims
  • Whether this is a trafficked child

The case discussion should assess ongoing risks and agree a protection plan, which will be managed through the core group process.

If it is considered that the child has been trafficked, there will be a referral to the Competent Authority.  If it is considered that the child has not been trafficked, the case discussion will consider if there are other concerns under the Child Protection/Vulnerable Young Person procedures.
