Short Break Bureau

The Short Break Bureau is a new and exciting way of coordinating respite and short breaks for carers and service users in Argyll and Bute.  Although Argyll and Bute Council recognised the importance of short breaks for carers, up until now there has been limited options for respite provision.  We know that what suits one person doesn’t suit everyone and so we wanted to provide a personalised service which would be more tailored to the needs of the individuals.  Now the opportunity exists to have a specialised short break service, where time is taken with people to look at different options and find the best one for them.

The bureau was first launched in Helensburgh in February 2011, and was rolled out across the rest of Argyll and Bute during 2011.

The service is available to people over the age of 18 with mental health issues, learning disabilities, physical disabilities and older people. The breaks are overnight and away from home for a minimum of one night, with the length of stay depending on the individual's needs.

The Short Break Bureau aims to provide more flexibility, more choice and more control for those going on overnight respite breaks. Funding for the breaks is provided by Argyll and Bute Council and is based on assessed need. However, the bureau can also be used free of charge for those who are self funding breaks.

We can provide information on accommodation, medical equipment hire, transport and sources of funding. We are able to help groups of people arranging breaks as well as individuals.
