B836 Glen Lean - bridge now open

The B836 at Glen Lean is now open following work to install a temporary bridge.

Background information

An initial inspection showed the bridge to be significantly damaged.

We had originally planned to install a temporary bridge over the existing bridge while we repaired the damage. However, further inspection of the bridge revealed that the existing structure cannot be repaired to sufficient safety standards and needs to be fully demolished.

We are therefore in the process of installing a temporary bridge upstream of the existing bridge.

We were planning to lift the bridge into place with a crane on 22 November but the forecast high winds meant it was not safe for the crane to operate, ruling out re-opening the road by 24 November.

Our revised plan was to install the bridge at the weekend, then carry out the surfacing and connections at each end with the new sections of road which we have already constructed, and re-open on Tuesday 28 November.

Unfortunately, a knock-on effect of the high winds was difficulty in transporting the bridge safely to the site. With wind speeds higher than safe limits allow for transportation on Monday 27 November, the bridge was delivered to the site on Tuesday 28 November to be put into position. Works are currently underway installing a temporary bridge further upstream of the existing bridge.

Work has progressed well this week and the temporary bridge is now in position. Surfacing works are almost complete. Subject to no further issues we expect this route to reopen safely to traffic tomorrow (Friday 1 December). This is likely to be in the afternoon but we will provide a further update tomorrow.

To everyone affected, thank you for your understanding. Our focus is on re-opening this route as quickly as is safe for workers and road users.

We are also moving forward with plans for a new, permanent bridge to be in place by April 2024.

The diversion is via the A886 - A815 and vice versa
