An Oban primary school is celebrating after triumphing in the annual Oban and Lorn indoor shinty sixes tournament.

Rockfield Primary held off the challenge of Lochnell to win the ‘A’ league. As well as winning the trophy, the school will go on to represent the area at the national indoor shinty sixes tournament in Fort William next month.

The competition was held over four weekends in December and January.  Rockfield won 18 of the 21 matches they played, scoring 59 points out of a possible 63. The team scored 65 goals, with just nine scored against them.

Councillor Rory Colville, Argyll and Bute’s spokesperson for third sector and communities said: “It’s a great achievement for Rockfield, who played exceptionally well throughout the tournament and were worthy winners, as the statistics show.

“I’m sure the Rockfield team will prove to be fantastic ambassadors not just for their school and the Oban and Lorn area, but for the whole of Argyll and Bute at the national tournament on February 25, and I would like to wish them the very best of luck.”

Rockfield Primary head teacher Jack Degnan said: “Everyone at the school is obviously delighted by the team’s success, and we’re excited to be representing our area at the Fort William event.

“The boys are practising hard in preparation for the big day, and they’re determined to make the most of it whatever the outcome.  It’s a big achievement to progress this far, and they’re going to make sure they enjoy every minute of it.

“With any luck we’ll have our usual vocal band of supporters with us, so we’re hoping for the best!”
