Marys Meals week

Argyll and Bute Mary's Meals week - 26th to 30th March 2012

Mary's meals logoArgyll and Bute’s Mary’s Meals week will be held in all Argyll and Bute’s schools (primary and secondary) from Monday, 26th March to Friday, 30th March.

During this week a donation of 10p from each school meal served will be made to Mary’s Meals which will cover the costs of feeding 2 children at a Mary’s Meals school. This is described as an “ethical incentive” scheme and there will be no direct cost to either the pupils or the schools, though it is hoped that children will develop empathy for and desire to help those children less fortunate than themselves and will choose to take a school meal. Prior to the 26th March schools will raise awareness about Mary’s Meals by delivering assemblies.

Children who take a packed lunch will not be excluded and a voluntary donation may be given. The Council hope to raise £3,000 to donate to Mary’s Meals.

Schoolchildren from Dalmally Primary school will launch the week at an event at the school on Tuesday 6 March.  This will mark the start of a week-long series of events from 26 – 30 March where schools across the whole of Argyll and Bute will get their chance to support the charity.

Dalmally school pupils will be given a talk from Tony Begley of Mary’s Meals about the work the charity does.  They will then be given cups of porridge to show what a school meal looks and tastes like in a Mary’s Meals’ schools.

What is Mary's Meals?

When Magnus McFarlane-Barrow started Mary‘s Meals from his home in Dalmally in 2002, 200 children in Malawi were provided with a daily meal.  Last year almost 600,000 children were fed in 16 different countries. Mary’s Meals‘ vision is for every child to receive a daily meal in a place of education and its HQ is still based in Dalmally.

You can find out more about what they do on the Mary's Meals website.
