Parts of this site and the Capita Payment site use very strong encryption technology (128 bit SSL) to ensure that all of the data you enter is unreadable as it is transported across the internet. To ressure you that you are connected to a secure server, examine the web page address line (URL) at the top of the Leisure Bookings webpage which begins "https:" (rather than "http:"). This confirms your connection to a secure server.You will also see a small yellow padlock on the bottom right of your screen if you are using Internet Explorer, or a key if you are using Netscape. Details of the Councils encryption certificate can be viewed by clicking on the padlock / key.

Browser CompatibilityYou will only be able to use these facilities if your browser can support 128 bit encryption. Older versions of browsers may not be
able to support 128 bit encryption. If you see an error message or a message that says the page cannot be found, then your browser
might not support this level of protection. You will need to upgrade your security to 128 bit if this is the case. There is an easy
way to check if your browser supports 128 bit encryption:

If you use Internet Explorer:

  • From the top menu, click on Help.
  • From the drop down menu, select About Internet Explorer.
  • The information displayed for Cipher Strength is the encryption level (i.e. Cipher Strength: 128-bit).
  • If it does not say 128-bit, then you do not have a browser with 128-bit encryption.
The latest Internet Explorer encryption software can be downloaded free from Microsoft Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack download page

.If you use Netscape:

  • From the toolbar menu, click on the Security button.
  • Within the window displayed, from the list of items on the left side, click on Navigator.
  • On the right, below Advanced Security (SSL) Configuration, ensure both the Secure Sockets Layer check boxes are checked.
  • Click on the Configure SSL v3 button.
  • On the Configure Ciphers screen, ensure the RC4 encryption with 128-bit key and an MD5 MAC checkbox is checked. If this checkbox is not displayed on the screen, or it says RC4 encryption with a 128-bit key and an MD5 (when permitted), then you do not have a browser with 128 bit encryption. The latest encryption software can be downloaded free from Netscape
Internet Explorer Users (Mac):
  • Select the Apple menu from the top of the screen.
  • The information displayed for the Cipher Strength is the encryption level.
  • If it does not say 128-bit, then you do not have a browser with 128-bit encryption.
The latest Internet Explorer encryption software can be downloaded free from Microsoft Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack download page

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

A key feature of transmission of sensitive data between the Council and it's Customers will be the incorporation of 128 bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption services. SSL is the standard encryption technology used in e-commerce today to transmit sensitive data over TCP/IP - the communications protocol used on the Internet between computers. SSL provides:

  • Data Encryption - using 128 bit public key encryption mechanisms to ensure secure transmission of data between a customer and the server on which data is being collected;
  • Server Authentication - The Customer can be assued that the server with which they are communicating with has appropriate certification which is both current and is genuine, having been issued by a recognised certificate authority (Verisign). i.e. the transaction details are being sent to who they think they are sending it to;
  • Message Integrity - SSL contains features for detecting any attempt to tamper with the data while in transit;
SSL provides an assurance of security and data integrity during the transmission of data between the Customer, the Payment Service Provider and the Council during online leisure bookings and payment.
