The aim of the Community Childminding Scheme is to provide an appropriate and practical service which enhances the health and quality of life of children within Argyll and Bute.
The Community Childminding Scheme is a non-statutory, discretionary service, which is offered by Argyll Bute Council. The Scheme works on a referral system, usually from Health Visitors, Social Workers or other professionals and is free of charge. Early intervention is intended to reduce the number of families who may otherwise be referred to the statutory agencies.
The purpose of the Scheme is to provide short term specialist support to parents or guardians of children aged 0-3 years, the aim being to help families in difficult situations that may deteriorate, and which could affect the normal development of the child/ren, and to give support to families where there are issues of poor physical or mental health, drug and/or alcohol addiction, poverty, domestic abuse, isolation etc.
If the family are willing to accept assistance and the referral meets the criteria of the Scheme, a Community Childminder is then matched with the family; a simple contract is then drawn up between the Childminder and the parent or guardian. Care of the child is given in the Childminder’s home, whilst the referrer and if required, other professionals, work with the family on the issues which have been identified.
Reviews are held every 6-8 weeks approximately, usually in the family home, allowing everyone to discuss arrangements and decide on the best way forward for the family. This confidential service withdraws after a short period of time once immediate issues have been resolved.
If you think that your family circumstances are such that you may benefit from this service please seek advice from your Health Visitor or Social Worker.
