The Lomond and Argyll Primary Care NHS Trust has published a series of plans to develop healthcare services across its area. The Trust is working with Argyll and Bute Council to jointly commission various services such as provision for the elderly and children. A state of the art tele-medicine link allows patients and X-rays to be examined remotely by specialists in Paisley, as well as being a key feature of the upgraded Accident and Emergency departments at the Vale of Leven Hospital, Lorn and the Islands
and Mid Argyll Hospitals. More decisions can then be taken on a local basis, resulting in fewer transfers to other hospitals for treatment. A similar link has been set up between Campbeltown Hospital and the Southern General in Glasgow. This system cuts down the need to transport patients as a diagnosis can almost always be made either in person by a consultant or through the link and treatment given locally. Similar technology is also currently being used between general practitioners on the islands of Coll
and Tiree and consultant psychiatrists in Lochgilphead.

A strategic agreement has been reached between the Lomond & Argyll Primary Care NHS Trust and Argyll and Bute Council to outline the shared understanding of relevant issues in the area. The agreement details the joint objectives and priorities of the two organisations and identifies
principles, together with actions that each will take to address priorities. A range of specific areas of partnership working have been identified to improve service delivery for the people of Argyll and Bute. The Council undertakes a wide variety of health promotion activities, recognising the
potential for local authorities to promote the health of the nation.

The Lomond & Argyll Primary Care NHS Trust supports a network of Community Hospitals, although some treatments will always involve travel to specialist centres in the central belt of Scotland. The commissioning of the Lorn and Islands District General Hospital has changed historic patterns of care for residents of Kintyre where General Practitioners have reversed previous referral patterns for general surgery and general medicine from Glasgow to Oban.
