Welfare Rights-Information on Carer’s Allowance

What is Carer’s Allowance? Carer’s Allowance (CA) is a benefit that may be paid to people who care for someone who is severely disabled. It is taxable but is not affected by your savings. If you get entitlement to CA you may qualify for a Carer’s Premium or Carer’s additional amount of income-related benefit.

NB: Claiming Carer’s Allowance can affect the Benefits of the disabled person being cared for. Get advice from your local Welfare Rights Officer – contact details below

Do You Qualify?

• You are aged 16 or over

• The person you care for receives either:
- Disability Living Allowance care component at the middle - or highest rate; or
- Attendance Allowance; or
- Constant Attendance Allowance

• You regularly care for 35 hours or more a week

• You are not in full time education

• If you work, you must not earn more than the earnings limit

• You satisfy the residence and immigration conditions

Carer’s Allowance can be backdated for three months. Claims can be made up to three months after the disabled person has been awarded the appropriate rate of Disability Living Allowance or Attendance Allowance without loss of benefit.

(You can only receive one award of Carer’s Allowance, even if you care for more than one person.)
