Respite Care

Respite is provided in different ways and is tailored to the needs of each individual. The following list is not exhaustive but gives examples of how carers can get a break.

 Care can be provided within a person’s home with support workers looking after the cared-for person while the carer goes away.
 Care can be arranged in an appropriate residential unit.
 Using a Direct Payment, respite can be arranged so formal carers can be paid to support the cared-for person, either at home or in another setting.
 The cared-for person may go to a specialist centre to give respite to a carer.
 Fyne View, the respite house in Lochgilphead can be booked. Information leaflets are available (see contact numbers)

Accessing Respite

Carers are entitled to an assessment in their own right and can complete a carers assessment themselves or with assistance from a Carers Centre/ Project or Community Services (Social Work) staff. Forms are available from Carers Centres/Projects, Community Services (Social Work) offices or from the Council web site.

A Community Care assessment for the ’cared-for’ person may also identify a need for respite care. Where this need is identified, this will be arranged by social work staff after discussing the best options with all concerned.

Staff will take the following eligibility into consideration during an assessment.

High Priority

The cared-for person lives permanently with the family or others who are in need of respite to maintain their caring role or are temporarily unavailable.

Medium Priority

Respite care is provided as part of a planned package of care to an unpaid carer/spouse who is providing regular and substantive care.

Each period of respite care is usually a week but could also be just a few days. This will be discussed at the assessment stage.

Funding

A financial contribution is required to be made by people receiving respite care. This currently ranges between £50 to £100 per week depending on age. This changes from each April. This information will be provided by staff carrying out the assessment.

People who receive Direct Payments can arrange for the cost of respite care to be included in their Direct Payment. Information about Direct Payments can be obtained from Social Work staff, Direct Payments Adviser, Carers Centres or on the council web site.
