Scottish Cycle Training Scheme

...be safe on your bike....

Child cycle training is not only about reducing casualties in a vunerable road user group. Teaching basic road sense at an early age will lay a good foundation for their future as safe road users. After all - today's child cyclist is tomorrow's young driver.

All of our 79 Primary Schools regularly get involved in the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme (SCTS) and staff do a great job training and preparing nearly 900 pupils every year for their test.

Ride SafelyMore than half of the schools now conduct on-road training, usually over a six week period. During that time children learn:

  • the importance of cycle maintenance
  • the Highway Code for the Young Road User
  • manoeuvring safely through obstacles
  • riding safely on the road

National Cycling Proficiency Scheme

Testing is carried out by our Road Safety Officers and at present they achieve an excellent pass rate of around 85%.
