COUNCILS CALL FOR CROWN ESTATE REVIEW

A report looking at the operation of the Crown Estate in Scotland has been published and will now be considered by the Scottish Executive.

The Crown Estate Review Working Group was formed in 2004 by all the Councils in the Highlands and Islands, including Argyll and Bute Council, together with Highlands and Islands Enterprise and COSLA in order to produce a report which would:-

  • describe the property rights which make up the Crown Estate in Scotland, including their nature, ownership, use and management; and

  • suggest ways in which these property rights could be managed to deliver greater public benefits and accountability in Scotland.

The Group’s findings have now been published in a comprehensive report which can be viewed by clicking the link on this page. It concludes with a recommendation that:-
the Secretary of State for Scotland and Scottish Ministers should, given the changed circumstances of devolution, implement a review to ensure that the property, rights and interests which make up the Crown Estate in Scotland contribute more fully to the delivery of Scottish Executive policies and the well being of the people of Scotland.

The report was endorsed by Argyll and Bute Council in November 2006 and has now been agreed by all the parties in the Crown Estate Review Working Group. It has been submitted to the Scottish Government for consideration.
