Look at your journey to work

Are you making the most of what Argyll and Bute has to offer? Can you improve your health, save money and protect the environment as part of your working day?

Cyclists at Strath of Appin

The journey to work is an ideal chance to help build up the thirty minutes a day of regular physical activity you need. You save on fuel, fares and gain all of the health benefits that healthy living and regular physical activity bring. Active Travel is for you – enjoy your journey to work.

Walking or cycling even for part of your journey is beneficial for your health.

That can include:

  • Walking to the bus stop
  • Walking to a neighbours’ house to share a lift
  • Walking to the shops at lunch time

Enjoy good health:

  • Walking a mile only takes about 20 minutes and will burn 100 calories.
  • The greatest benefits are accrued by the least physically active who begins to undertake some physical activity – even just 10 minute bouts on one or two days a week.
  • Physical activity can halve the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer and reduces the risk of stroke and osteoporosis.

Enjoy where we live:

  • Your journey could be a chance to enjoy our scenery, fresh air, relax, chat with friends or unwind.
  • Cycling and walking is simple – open your door and off you go! And its free……

Enjoy making a difference:

  • 20% of journeys under 1 mile are made by car.
  • 6 out of 10 men and 7 out of 10 women put their health at risk by undertaking less than the minimum recommended levels of physical activity (that’s a total of 30 minutes most days of the week).

In a rural area like Argyll and Bute many of us live in isolated areas with limited public transport options.
No one expects you to walk or cycle 20 miles!....but could you walk 1 mile?
