Community Transport Project Review

This review summarises the work arising from a project initiated following the publication of a study by Prof. R McQuaid of Napier University in 2003 entitled “Resolving Transport Issues in a Rural Area – Argyll and Bute”. The study focussed on three pilot areas in Argyll and Bute, the Island of Islay, the Island of Bute and the village of Dalmally.

Following publication of the study, Argyll and Bute Council along with their partners in the project, NHS, Scottish Ambulance Service and the Association of Argyll and Bute Community Councils applied for and were successful in receiving Sustainable Action Grant Funding from the Scottish Executive to employ a Development Worker to implement the recommendations arising from the Napier Study.

This review describes the successes and shortcomings of that work, highlighting a number of case studies. It also provides some lessons learned through the work which may assist those embarking on a similar project.
