Pupils from primary schools in Argyll and Bute have been presented with bike locks by the Mid Argyll, Kintyre and Islay Community Safety Forum.

Pupils in Mid Argyll, Islay, Jura and Colonsay primary schools were presented with the locks after successfully completing their cycling proficiency tests.

By locking their bikes the children are not only preventing theft, but also learning to look after their belongings.

Marking bikes with postcodes also provides an easy way of identifying bikes that may have been lost or stolen and permanent ultra violet markers can be obtained from the police.

Councillor Alison Hay, said: “I am delighted that the children have all passed their cycling proficiency test.

“I was also pleased to see that they were all wearing helmets. Studies have shown that people who wear cycle helmets are less likely to suffer brain injuries if they are in an accident, than those who do not.

“This is a very important message to get across to people of all ages in Argyll and Bute and I would like to congratulate the pupils of Ardrishaig for recognising this."
