A warm welcome to the Argyll and Bute Council Archives

A selection of historic postcards The Archive Service holds and preserves the official records of not only the Argyll and Bute Council, but those which the Council inherited from Strathclyde Regional Council and Argyll and Bute District Council.

The Archive Service also provides accommodation for those derived from private individuals, estates, solicitors, businesses and organisations within the area of Argyll and Bute Council, records that are considered of historic interest and worthy of permanent preservation. These private records are often held on indefinite loan and remain the property of the person or institute depositing them.

USING THE ARCHIVES


When you arrive at reception a member of staff will be available to assist you. Please bring proof of your identity, e.g. a passport or driving licence, with
you. We will then be able to issue you with a Reader's Card.


We ask that you follow a few simple guidelines to enable our records to be preserved for future generations.

  • Please do not lean on documents to keep them flat We will provide you with special weights if required

  • Do not lean on documents to take notes

  • Do not mark the document in any way
