Recycling

In the last four years, Argyll and Bute Council, Community and private sector waste and recycling partners have acrued the following totals:
  • Paper - 11,002 tonnes
  • Cardboard - 2,036 tonnes
  • Plastic Bottles - 207 tonnes
  • Glass bottles and jars - 5,974 tonnes

Please rinse your plastic containers, remove their lids and squash them before putting them into the recycling bin. TIP When you have finished washing your dishes use your dish water to wash out your containers.

  • Recycling one tonne of glass SAVES 1.2 tonnes of raw materials
  • Recycling one tonne of cardboard can SAVE up to 17 trees
  • Recycling one tonne of paper can SAVE up to 17 trees and 32,000 litres of water
  • Recycling one aluminium can SAVES enough energy to run a television for 3 hours



Several groups are involved with the Recycling Process in Argyll and Bute. Some of these groups are listed below:


Glass Collection and recycling scheme by Greenlight Environmental.


Kerbside collection of recyclable waste in the Campbeltown area Kintyre Recycling Limited.


Education and waste minimisation awareness by the Group for Recycling in Argyll & Bute (GRAB).


Support to local groups for amenity clean-ups - The Argyll & Bute Trust, Oban Litter Busters and Beachwatch Bute. Establishment of small-scale operations, which compliment existing businesses - Dun-Beag Community Composting in Tighnabruaich and shredding for animal bedding on Islay and Mull.


Argyll and Bute Council are offering a PAPER AND CARDBOARD RECYCLING SERVICE FOR ISLAY, JURA, MULL AND IONA. An application form to participate in this service can be found by clicking on the related article below.
