Heritage Trail Leaflets now available

The Campbeltown Heritage Trail Group has just released two leaflets that highlight the town’s historic past.

The first leaflet specialises in the area’s unique, rich architecture. Written by David McEwan, it focuses on the work of four Glasgow architects who designed many of Campbeltown’s most prominent buildings during Campbeltown’s most prosperous period.

The content for the second leaflet was produced by Alex McKinven and takes a look at some of the key points in Campbeltown’s history. Not only is it a valuable source to visitors, but it is also ideal for locals wanting to find out more about the area they live in.  Are you aware that Campbeltown was the focus for press gang activity during the American War of Independance and the later French Wars? Are you also aware that the Earl of Argyll's Rebellion in 1685 started right here in Campbeltown?

Alex is one of the volunteer guides who delivers historic walking tours around Campbeltown during the summer months. These tours take place every Wednesday at 1pm, leaving from the tourist information centre, and have proved extremely popular. However, because both leaflets contain referenced maps, they are ideal for people wishing to carry out their own tours of the key buildings and sites at any time throughout the year.

Both leaflets are available from a number of local shops and offices including the Town Centre Regeneration Office, as well as Campbeltown Tourist Information Centre.

It is hoped that the leaflets and the trail have provided another tourist attraction for the town centre.

The Campbeltown Heritage Trail Group is made of volunteers and has been formed as part of the Campbeltown THI (Townscape Heritage Initiative).  The cost of printing the leaflets and advertising the tours is covered by the THI funders, including; Heritage Lottery Fund, Argyll and the Islands LEADER and Argyll and Bute Council.
